Called the band’s “most political song”, Rolling Stone ranked the song on their list of the Greatest Songs of All Time. Jagger allegedly wrote it about Tariq Ali after he attended a anti-war rally at London’s US embassy, during which mounted police attempted to control a crowd of 25, He also found inspiration in the rising violence among student rioters on Paris’s Left Bank, the precursor to a period of civil unrest in May The song opens with a strummed acoustic riff.
In his review, Richie Unterberger says of the song, ” That unsettling, urgent guitar rhythm is the mainstay of the verses. Mick Jagger’s typically half-buried lyrics seem at casual listening like a call to revolution. Unterberger continues, “Perhaps they were saying they wished they could be on the front lines, but were not in the right place at the right time; perhaps they were saying, as John Lennon did in the Beatles’ “Revolution”, that they didn’t want to be involved in violent confrontation.
Or perhaps they were even declaring indifference to the tumult. In , Roy Carr assessed it as a “great summer street-corner rock anthem on the same echelon as ‘Summer in the City’, ‘Summertime Blues’, and ‘Dancing in the Street’. With Jagger on lead vocals and both he and Richards on backing, Brian Jones performs the song’s distinctive sitar and also tamboura. Richards plays the song’s acoustic guitars as well as bass, the latter being the only electric instrument on the track.
Charlie Watts performs drums while Nicky Hopkins performs the song’s piano which is most distinctly heard during the outro.

Add Genre. Add Styles. Add Moods. Add Themes. Other than, possibly, “Sympathy for the Devil,” “Street Fighting Man” was the best song on the Rolling Stones’ album, Beggars Banquet, and a classic single, although exposure problems kept it on the fringes of the Top Lyrical content aside, it’s a great track, gripping the listener immediately with its sudden, springy guitar chords and thundering, offbeat drums.
That unsettling, urgent guitar rhythm is the mainstay of the verses. Mick Jagger’s typically half-buried lyrics seem at casual listening like a call to revolution: summer’s here and the time is right for fighting in the streets. That was a particularly trenchant message in , when there actually was a lot of fighting in the streets: in American race riots, at the Chicago Democratic convention, and as students and workers went on strike in Paris.
Perhaps they were saying they wished they could be on the front lines, but were not in the right place at the right time; perhaps they were saying, as John Lennon did in the Beatles’ “Revolution,” that they didn’t want to be involved in violent confrontation. Or perhaps they were even declaring indifference to the tumult.
As for his musical contribution, Jagger makes particularly effective use of his slurring style on the verses, elongating the ends of lines with a drawling insouciance. The noise that sounds like an electronic drone at parts particularly on the instrumental fadeout is actually a tamboura, played by Brian Jones in one of his most ingenious and little-noticed additions of an Eastern influence on a Stones recording.

Street Fighting Man was released as Beggars Banquet’s lead single on August 31, , in the US, but was kept out of the Top 40 (reaching #48) of the US.
This 45 was released on August 31, , just three days after the riots and protests at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. This is most likely the reason that the sleeve was recalled and withdrawn from sale. It is unknown how many of these sleeves were printed, but almost all were destroyed before the 45 was shipped to distributors. A few copies escaped the shredder and those were kept by London Records employees. It is unlikely that any sleeves ever made it into retail stores.
